How to use the prop firm challenge calculator

Start with your firm’s dashboard and current account terms.

  1. Match your rules

Choose a template or custom settings. Verify the daily allowance, reset anchor, drawdown model and exact breach boundaries.

  2. Enter the snapshot

Add initial balance, current balance and equity. Enter the relevant daily reset figures and qualifying historical high for a trailing rule.

  3. Reserve existing risk

Add a planning buffer, further loss from current equity to existing stops, and additional future costs. Enter the proposed next-trade risk.

  4. Review the plan

Check the tighter loss floor, remaining risk budget and projected equity. Optionally add a closed-profit target and best-day consistency check.

Use actual starting balance. A buying-power account label can differ from the balance used by a programme. Enter all amounts in the selected currency; changing the currency code relabels the figures and does not convert them.

From loss limits to additional trade risk

How does a prop firm risk calculator work?

A prop firm risk calculator turns each enabled loss rule into an equity floor. Current equity minus that floor gives the remaining loss headroom. When daily and overall limits are both enabled, the higher floor is the tighter constraint.

The tool subtracts your planning buffer, additional existing-stop risk and extra cost reserve from that tighter headroom. What remains is a ceiling for additional trade risk under the entered snapshot, rather than a recommended amount to risk.

Current balance includes closed P&L and booked costs. Equity also includes floating P&L. The calculator uses equity for its loss checks and closed balance for the profit target. A current breach or an earlier breach you report sets the additional budget to zero.

Risk budget formula · no reported or current breach

Headroom = Equity − Tighter floor

Tighter floor
Higher of the active daily and overall equity floors
Total reserves
Planning buffer + further existing-stop risk + extra costs
Additional budget
Maximum of zero and headroom minus total reserves
Loss scenario
Equity − existing-stop risk − extra costs − proposed new-trade loss
The buffer is retained headroom, not another projected loss. Floors stay constant in the loss scenario. Touch-breach rules can make a ceiling exclusive when no buffer is reserved.
Worked example · custom rules, not a firm offer

A $100,000 challenge risk-budget example

Assume a $100,000 initial balance, $102,000 current balance and $101,500 equity. The daily rule anchors to a $101,000 reset balance and allows 5% of initial balance, giving a $96,000 floor. A static 10% overall allowance gives a $90,000 floor.

  • Daily headroom$101,500 − $96,000 = $5,500
  • Overall headroom$101,500 − $90,000 = $11,500
  • Binding limitDaily loss floor
  • Total reserves$250 + $500 + $50 = $800
Subtract reserves before testing another trade
Tighter headroom = $5,500
Buffer = $250
Further existing-stop risk = $500
Extra costs = $50
$4,700additional risk ceiling · not a suggested trade size

A proposed $500 new-trade loss gives projected equity of $101,500 − $500 existing risk − $50 costs − $500 new risk = $100,450. That leaves $4,450 above the $96,000 floor, including the retained buffer.

With a 10% closed-profit target, the target balance is $110,000. At a current balance of $102,000, another $8,000 of closed profit is needed before considering any separate consistency requirement.

Choose the floor your programme actually uses

Static, daily and trailing drawdown explained

A trading drawdown calculator needs the right reference, allowance and breach boundary.

Illustrative loss-floor methods · exact programme rules vary
MethodReferenceHow the floor is determined
Static overallInitial balanceInitial balance minus the entered loss allowance
Daily lossSelected reset anchorReset anchor minus the daily allowance, or an entered dashboard floor
End-of-day trailingHighest qualifying closing balanceEntered historical high minus the allowance, with an optional maximum floor
Intraday trailingHighest qualifying equity or balanceSelected historical high minus the allowance, with an optional maximum floor
Manual floorFirm dashboardUses the daily or overall equity floor you enter directly

The allowance can be a fixed cash amount or a percentage of the selected base. For a trailing percentage, verify whether the allowance is based on initial balance or the high-water mark. The historical high must be entered; it cannot be reconstructed from current equity alone.

Reset references and moving floors

Using the prop firm daily loss calculator

A daily drawdown calculator needs the firm’s actual session-reset figures. This tool can anchor the daily floor to reset balance, reset equity, the higher of those two values or initial balance. The daily percentage can use a separately selected base.

Enter the reset snapshot your programme specifies, rather than assuming your local midnight applies. The tool does not reset the reference automatically. Open positions may still carry risk when a new daily floor takes effect.

As a trailing drawdown calculator, it also distinguishes qualifying end-of-day balance highs from intraday equity or balance highs. An intraday profit does not automatically become an end-of-day qualifying high. Update the input only as the programme requires.

Illustrative trailing-floor comparison

$100,000 initial balance
$104,000 qualifying high

Fixed allowance
$10,000 loss allowance → $94,000 floor
Peak percentage
10% of $104,000 → $10,400 allowance → $93,600 floor
Optional cap
If a maximum floor applies, the floor stops rising at that entered level
Current headroom
Current equity minus the applicable floor
These are alternative custom methods. They are not interchangeable, and no named firm’s rule is implied. Match the selected model to your account terms or enter the actual dashboard floor.
Closed-profit objectives and best-day limits

Prop firm profit target and consistency calculator

The prop firm profit target calculator adds a percentage of initial balance or a fixed profit amount to initial balance. It compares that target with current closed balance; floating profit is not counted as closed target progress.

An optional consistency check compares best-day profit with either net closed profit or the sum of profitable days’ P&L. For a net-profit rule, the required profit objective can increase when the best day requires a higher total. Positive-days checks remain separate.

For example, under an inclusive 50% best-day rule with a $3,000 best day, the relevant profit denominator must be at least $6,000. A strictly-below rule requires more than $6,000. These estimates assume the best day stays unchanged.

Profit target formula

Target balance = Initial + Target profit

Closed profit
Current balance − initial balance
Further profit
Maximum of zero and required target balance − current balance
Best-day share
Best day ÷ selected profit basis × 100
Period assumption
No deposits, withdrawals or unreconciled reward resets
Meeting the entered target and consistency numbers does not verify minimum trading days, payout eligibility or a passed challenge. Further gains on the same best day can raise the consistency requirement.
Use the estimate with the right account information

Three checks for prop firm risk management

A prop trading calculator can test a snapshot; it cannot certify account compliance.

Avoid counting losses twice

Floating losses and charged costs already belong in current equity. Existing-stop risk means only the further loss from current prices to those stops. Add future costs separately. The planning buffer is headroom you intend to retain.

Check the exact boundary

Some rules breach below a floor; others breach at or below it. At the floor, no further loss room remains even when equality is allowed. Report a known earlier breach: recovering equity does not erase it.

Verify programme status

Use this funded account calculator only where the entered equity-floor rules fit. Named templates are editable starting points, not automatic updates. Confirm the firm’s current dashboard, session rules and account phase; position limits, news restrictions and payout conditions are not checked.

Quick answers

Prop firm challenge calculator FAQs

Understand daily loss limits, trailing floors, additional risk budgets, profit targets and consistency.

Created by VIP Algos for educational trade planning. Your firm’s current dashboard and programme terms remain the reference for account status and compliance.

Is this prop firm challenge calculator free?

Yes. The tool is free to use without registration, a download or connecting your trading account. VIP Algos premium indicators are optional and separate from this calculator.

What does the prop firm drawdown calculator measure?

It calculates the equity floors for the loss rules you enable and the headroom between current equity and each floor. It uses the tighter floor to estimate a ceiling for additional risk after your reserves. This differs from simply measuring a percentage decline from a peak.

Why are balance and equity different inputs?

Balance reflects closed trades and booked charges. Equity also reflects floating profit or loss. This tool checks losses against equity and targets against closed balance. Use the actual figures and accounting treatment monitored by your firm.

How does the daily loss limit work?

A daily floor is the selected reset anchor minus the daily allowance, unless you enter a dashboard floor directly. The anchor and percentage base can differ. Use the firm’s actual reset reference and update it when required; the calculator does not perform automatic resets.

Does trailing drawdown include unrealised profit?

That depends on the selected rule. An intraday equity trail can follow a qualifying unrealised equity high. An intraday balance trail follows closed balance highs, while an end-of-day trail uses qualifying closing balances. Enter the correct historical high for the chosen method.

Can I enter the floor shown in my firm’s dashboard?

Yes. Daily and overall rules each have a manual dashboard-floor option. This is useful when a reset, withdrawal or special adjustment makes a simple formula unsuitable. Update equity and reserves as well. Target and net-consistency calculations still assume a period without cash flows.

How much risk can I take on the next trade?

The result is a planning ceiling after the entered buffer, existing-stop risk and future cost reserve. It is not a risk recommendation or a guarantee of stop execution. With a touch-breach rule and no buffer, risk may need to remain strictly below the displayed ceiling.

What should I enter for risk to existing stops?

Enter only the additional loss from current equity if existing positions reach their stops. Do not add entry-to-current floating losses again because they are already in equity. Also avoid adding charges already deducted from the account as future costs.

What does the fixed-loss count tell me?

It counts whole losses of the proposed fixed amount that fit the current budget after existing reserves, respecting the breach boundary. Floors and the cash loss amount stay constant. It is not a pass probability or a simulation of future resets, profits or changing trailing highs.

Can I use this as a funded account calculator?

Yes, where the account’s loss rules can be represented by the selected equity floors and inputs. Use actual starting balance rather than assuming a buying-power label is the same figure. Payout rules, deposits, withdrawals and reward resets are not automatically reconciled.

How is the prop firm profit target calculated?

A percentage or fixed profit amount is added to initial balance to form the target balance. The gap uses current closed balance. With an enabled net-profit consistency rule, a large best day can raise the required objective. Floating profit alone does not close the target gap.

How does the best-day consistency check work?

It compares your best day with the selected profit basis: net closed profit or the sum of profitable days. Choose whether equality is allowed. Further-profit estimates assume the best day remains unchanged. Extra profit earned on that same day can change the requirement.

Does a green result mean I have passed the challenge?

No. It indicates that the entered loss scenario fits the selected floors and buffer at the current snapshot. Previous breaches, minimum-day requirements, news restrictions, trading-style rules and payout conditions are not verified. Check final status with the firm.

Can I use the templates for FTMO, Topstep or another firm?

The embedded tool includes editable named templates for specified programmes and phases, with official reference links. They are not automatically updated. Match every setting to your current account terms or use custom rules. VIP Algos is independent of the named firms.

Does changing account currency convert my figures?

No. The currency field changes the labels only. Enter balance, equity, floors, risk, costs and targets consistently in that currency. The calculator does not fetch exchange rates or convert the amounts.
