How to use the gold profit calculator

Check a planned XAUUSD exit or review a completed gold trade using your actual fills.

  1. Choose your gold quote

Select XAUUSD or another available gold quote and enter your account currency. Prices are quoted per troy ounce in the selected currency.

  2. Check lots & ounces

Enter your size in lots or troy ounces. Match “Troy ounces per 1 lot” to your broker’s gold symbol specification.

  3. Set direction & prices

Choose Buy or Sell, then enter executable entry and exit prices. Add known costs, signed financing and any required conversion rate.

  4. Calculate gold P&L

Review the position in ounces, directional price move, gross profit or loss and net result after the charges you entered.

Start with the contract size. The example uses 100 troy ounces per lot. A broker with a different contract size gives a different result for the same number of lots. Verify the symbol settings before comparing scenarios.

Understand gold trading profit

How does an XAUUSD profit calculator work?

An XAUUSD profit calculator applies the change in the gold price to your position in troy ounces. XAU represents gold and USD is the quote currency: an XAUUSD price of 2,500 means $2,500 per troy ounce.

For a linear gold contract, a Buy trade has a positive gross result when the exit price is above the entry. A Sell trade has a positive gross result when the exit is below the entry. A move against the selected direction creates a gross loss.

The gold trading profit calculator separates that price result from commission, fixed fees and financing. If your account uses a different currency, supply the applicable conversion rate. The tool does not fetch live quotes or exchange rates.

Linear gold profit and loss formula

Buy P&L = (Exit − Entry) × Ounces
Sell P&L = (Entry − Exit) × Ounces

Gold position
Lots × troy ounces per lot
Gross result
Price difference × ounces, in the gold quote currency
Net result
Convert gross P&L into account currency, subtract entered fees and add signed financing
These formulas apply to the linear method. A separate fixed tick-value method uses your broker-defined tick size and payout. Optional adverse exit slippage is applied before the price result is calculated.
Worked example · illustrative prices

Gold profit calculation: 0.10 lots of XAUUSD

Suppose you Buy 0.10 lots of XAUUSD at $2,500 per troy ounce and exit at $2,530. With a 100-ounce contract per lot, your position is 10 troy ounces. Assume a USD account and no additional slippage.

  • Position size0.10 lots / 10 oz
  • Contract size100 oz per lot
  • Entry → exit$2,500 → $2,530
  • Price move+$30 per oz
From gold price movement to net P&L
Position = 0.10 × 100 = 10 troy ounces
Price change = $2,530 − $2,500 = $30 per oz
Gross profit = $30 × 10 = $300
+$300gross gold trading profit · before costs

If round-trip commission is $7 per lot, the commission on 0.10 lots is $0.70. Add $1 fixed fees and a −$2 financing adjustment: net P&L = $300 − $0.70 − $1 − $2 = +$296.30.

For a Sell using the same entry and exit, gross P&L is −$300 and net P&L is −$303.70 with those same charges. These sample prices explain the calculation; they are not live prices or expected returns.

Compare gold lots and troy ounces

How lot size changes your gold profit or loss

With a 100-ounce gold contract, 0.01 lots represents 1 troy ounce, 0.10 lots represents 10 ounces and 1.00 lot represents 100 ounces. A larger position increases both the gain from a favourable move and the loss from an adverse move.

XAUUSD · USD account · 100 troy ounces per lot · before costs
Favourable move per oz0.01 lot
1 oz
0.10 lots
10 oz
1.00 lot
100 oz
$1+$1+$10+$100
$5+$5+$50+$500
$10+$10+$100+$1,000
$30+$30+$300+$3,000

An equally sized adverse move gives the corresponding gross loss under these assumptions. These are example contract specifications. Your broker’s gold contract, fees and account-currency conversion can change the result.

Gold price moves, points and ticks

Why use price per ounce instead of gold pips?

Gold pip and point conventions vary between brokers. The move from 2,500 to 2,530 is a $30 change per ounce in XAUUSD, regardless of how a platform labels its pips.

Set the calculator’s minimum price tick to your broker’s increment. With a 0.01 tick, that $30 move is 3,000 ticks. On a 0.10-lot position with 100 ounces per lot, one 0.01 tick is worth $0.10 before costs and conversion.

  • Price movement describes how far gold moved per ounce.
  • Tick size defines the smallest tradable price increment.
  • Position size determines how many ounces are exposed to that movement.
  • Net P&L includes the fees and signed financing you enter.
Profit calculation and risk-based sizing

Gold lot size calculator: choosing a position to test

If you are looking for a gold lot size calculator or XAUUSD lot size calculator, first decide whether you need to size a trade from a risk budget or check the P&L of a size you already have. This tool calculates profit and loss for the position you enter; it does not automatically solve for lots from a risk percentage.

For a linear XAUUSD contract in a USD account, a starting calculation before costs is: lots = cash risk ÷ (entry-to-stop distance per ounce × ounces per lot). For example, a $100 risk budget, $10 price distance and 100 ounces per lot gives 0.10 lots before fees, slippage or financing.

Enter that size in the calculator and use the planned stop as the exit to test the loss scenario. Add the known charges, check the broker’s volume increments and adjust the size if needed. Execution can move beyond the stop price, so this is an estimate rather than a guaranteed maximum loss.

Match the estimate to your gold symbol

Three checks for a useful gold trading calculation

The result depends on your contract, currency and entered charges.

Check the gold contract

Confirm troy ounces per lot, minimum volume, maximum volume and lot increment. If using fixed tick payouts, verify tick size, profit and loss tick values and settlement currency. The tool flags invalid trade sizes rather than silently resizing them.

Convert the correct currency

XAUUSD produces a USD price result under the linear method. A GBP, EUR or other account needs the applicable conversion rate if its currency differs from settlement. XAUEUR, XAUGBP, XAUAUD and XAUJPY presets are also available. No live rates are fetched.

Include costs once

Executable entry and exit prices reflect the spread. Enter round-trip commission per lot, fixed fees and total signed financing separately. Use zero extra slippage for actual fills. Margin requirements, liquidation and taxes are outside this calculation.

Quick answers

Gold profit and loss calculator FAQs

Understand XAUUSD position size, price movement, trading costs and account-currency results.

Created by VIP Algos for educational trade planning. For a platform reference, see MetaTrader’s explanation of profit calculation and account-currency conversion.

Is this gold profit calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is free to use without registration, a download or an indicator purchase. VIP Algos premium indicators are optional and separate from the tool.

Can I use it as an XAUUSD profit and loss calculator?

Yes. Choose XAUUSD, enter your direction, size and entry and exit prices, then calculate. A favourable move produces a positive gross result; an adverse move produces a negative gross result. Entered costs and financing determine the net result.

How much is 0.01 lot of gold?

With a 100-troy-ounce contract per lot, 0.01 lots is 1 ounce. A $1 move per ounce then produces $1 of gross profit or loss in XAUUSD, depending on direction. Check your broker’s ounces per lot because the contract size is editable and may differ.

How much profit does a $10 gold move make?

At 100 ounces per lot, a favourable $10-per-ounce XAUUSD move gives $10 gross on 0.01 lots, $100 on 0.10 lots and $1,000 on 1.00 lot. The same adverse movement gives the corresponding gross loss. These figures assume a USD account and exclude costs.

Does this gold trading calculator size trades from risk?

It calculates P&L for the lots or ounces you enter. It does not automatically calculate lots from account risk and stop distance. The lot-size section explains a starting risk-based formula and shows how to test a chosen size using the stop price as the exit.

What is the difference between gross and net gold profit?

Gross P&L is the price result before separately entered fees and financing. Net P&L subtracts commission and fixed fees, then adds signed financing. A financing credit is positive; a financing charge is negative. Costs default to zero, so include the applicable charges yourself.

How are gold pips, points and ticks handled?

Broker conventions for gold pips and points differ. This tool shows price movement per ounce and ticks based on your entered minimum price tick. For example, a $1 price move contains 100 ticks when the tick size is 0.01. Verify that increment with your broker.

Can I calculate gold profit in GBP, EUR or another currency?

Yes. Choose or type your account currency. If it differs from the settlement currency, enter the exchange rate applicable to the trade. Reverse quote entry is available. No live exchange rates are fetched or silently assumed.

Are spread, commission, swap and slippage included?

Use executable entry and exit prices to reflect the spread. Add round-trip commission per lot, fixed fees and signed swap or financing in account currency. Optional exit slippage adjusts the exit against the selected direction in minimum price ticks. Avoid counting costs or slippage twice when using actual fills.

Does changing Buy to Sell change the prices?

No. Your entered prices stay the same and the calculation direction changes. For a linear contract, a price rise produces a positive gross result for a Buy and a negative gross result for a Sell. With fees, the net gain and net loss will generally differ in size.

Can I use this for gold futures or a different gold contract?

The tool supports linear and broker-defined fixed tick-value calculations. Match ounces per contract, tick size, tick payouts, settlement currency and volume rules. For a contract traded only in whole numbers, set minimum size and increment accordingly. Inverse or nonlinear contracts are not modelled.

Does leverage change gold profit or loss?

For the same linear position size and price movement, leverage does not change gross price P&L. It changes the collateral requirement. Increasing the position changes potential profit and loss. This calculator does not check available margin or model liquidation.

Can I review a closed gold trade?

Yes. Enter the actual entry and exit fills, trade direction, position size, recorded charges and applicable conversion rate. Leave additional slippage at zero when already reflected in those fills. Compare the result with your broker’s final trading statement.

What does the optional account return show?

When you enter an account balance or equity, the tool calculates net P&L divided by that reference amount, multiplied by 100. It is a trade result relative to the entered account figure, not a return on margin or a forecast. Leave the reference amount blank to see cash results only.
