How to use the forex pip calculator

Check one pip, a signed movement or the distance between an entry and exit.

  1. Choose your pair

Select the forex pair and account currency. Verify the contract size, pip size and minimum price tick in Broker specifications.

  2. Enter your position

Use lots or underlying units. The calculator converts lots into units using your entered contract size and checks the broker’s volume rules.

  3. Enter pips or prices

Enter a signed pip movement, or choose Compare prices and add your entry, exit and Buy or Sell direction. Supply a conversion rate when required.

  4. Read the pip result

Review one-pip value, minimum-tick value, signed pips and the gross value of the movement in your account currency.

Only need the value of one pip? Use Enter pips and set movement to 0. To model a move, enter positive pips for a favourable scenario or negative pips for an adverse one. Prices and exchange rates are entered values, not live market data.

Understand the cash value of a pip

How does a pip value calculator work?

A pip value calculator measures how much a one-pip change is worth for your position. For a linear forex contract, multiply the number of base-currency units by the pip size. This gives the value in the pair’s quote currency.

On EUR/USD, a standard example uses 100,000 EUR units per lot and a pip size of 0.0001 USD per EUR. One lot therefore has a pip value of 100,000 × 0.0001 = $10. A 0.10-lot position has a $1 pip value under the same specifications.

The forex pip value calculator then converts that amount into your account currency where needed. Changing the account currency or conversion rate can change the displayed cash value, even when the position and pip definition stay the same.

Linear pip value formula

Pip value = Position units × Pip size

Position units
Lots × contract size per lot
Quote value
Units × pip size = one-pip value in quote currency
Account value
Quote pip value × account-currency units per one quote-currency unit
Movement value
Signed pips × account-currency pip value
Movement value uses the same conversion rate as the displayed pip value and excludes trading costs. The calculation assumes a linear contract and your entered instrument specifications.
Worked example · EUR/USD

Calculate the pip difference between two prices

Use Compare prices as a pip difference calculator. Suppose a Buy trade enters EUR/USD at 1.10000 and exits at 1.10150. With a pip size of 0.0001, the 0.00150 price change is a favourable 15-pip move.

  • Trade directionBuy / Long
  • Entry → exit1.10000 → 1.10150
  • Pip size0.0001
  • Position0.10 lots / 10,000 units
Price distance, pips and gross value
Price change = 1.10150 − 1.10000 = 0.00150
Signed pips = 0.00150 ÷ 0.0001 = +15 pips
Pip value = 10,000 × 0.0001 = $1 per pip
+$15gross movement value · USD account · before costs

For a Sell using those same prices, signed movement is −15 pips and gross P&L is −$15. The absolute price distance stays 0.00150; trade direction determines whether it is favourable or adverse.

Assumes a 100,000-unit contract per lot and a USD account. At 1.00 lot, that same move would be +$150 for a Buy or −$150 for a Sell before costs. These prices are illustrative.

Compare pips at different position sizes

Pip values for standard, mini and micro lots

The table shows EUR/USD in a USD account with 100,000 units per lot and a 0.0001 pip size. Standard, mini and micro examples correspond to 1.00, 0.10 and 0.01 lots under these specifications.

EUR/USD · USD account · 100,000 units per lot · before costs
Favourable move0.01 lot
1,000 units
0.10 lots
10,000 units
1.00 lot
100,000 units
1 pip+$0.10+$1+$10
10 pips+$1+$10+$100
15 pips+$1.50+$15+$150
50 pips+$5+$50+$500

The same adverse movement gives the corresponding gross loss in this example. Pip value depends on the contract size, pip definition and currency conversion. A different pair or account currency can give different cash results.

Read price precision correctly

What is the difference between a pip, pipette and tick?

  • Pip. Usually 0.0001 for forex pairs, or 0.01 when JPY is the quote currency. Verify the definition for your instrument.
  • Pipette. One tenth of a pip: 0.00001 for a 0.0001 pip, or 0.001 for a 0.01 JPY pip.
  • Minimum tick. The smallest allowed price increment. It is configured separately from the pip size.
  • Fractional pips. Supported when the movement represents a whole number of minimum price ticks.

For 1 lot of EUR/USD with a 0.0001 pip and a 0.00001 tick, one pip is $10 and one minimum tick is $1 in a USD account. Five decimal places do not automatically make one pip equal to the last digit.

JPY pairs and account currency

Why forex pip value changes between currencies

One lot of USD/JPY with 100,000 USD units and a 0.01 pip size has a quote-currency pip value of 1,000 JPY. In a JPY account, that is already the account-currency amount. In a USD account, it must be converted.

At an illustrative conversion price of 150 JPY per USD, 1,000 ÷ 150 is about $6.67 per pip. A favourable 10-pip move is about $66.67 at that same rate. The tool calculates from unrounded values, so multiplying a rounded display can give a slightly different total.

For a fixed position, pip size and contract, the quote-currency pip value stays constant. Its value in another account currency can change with the exchange rate. For third-currency accounts, enter the applicable conversion rate yourself.

How the tool selects a conversion rate
Quote account
No conversion when account and quote currencies match
Base account
Automatic conversion divides by the pair price
Compare prices
Uses the exit price for automatic base-currency conversion
Enter pips
Uses your entered pair price and holds the rate constant
Other accounts
Require an entered exchange rate; reverse quote entry is available
A broker-rate override is available for automatic base-currency conversion. No live prices or rates are fetched. Use a rate appropriate to your trade and broker.

Using the tool as a forex pip profit calculator

Gross movement value helps you compare scenarios. Net trade results also depend on costs and execution.

Compare profit and loss

As a pip profit calculator, the tool multiplies signed pips by pip value. Positive movement is favourable and negative movement is adverse. In Compare prices, the Buy or Sell direction determines the sign. A larger position increases both potential gains and losses for the same movement.

Account for trading costs

The pip movement result is gross. Spread is reflected if included in the entered execution prices; separate commission, financing and slippage are not added. For a scenario with entered fees and financing, use the forex profit and loss calculator.

Match the instrument

This trading pip calculator includes forex, gold, Bitcoin, an index CFD and custom linear-instrument examples. For non-forex markets, verify contract size, pip or point size, minimum tick and currency. Inverse, quanto and options contracts need a different model.

Is this pip calculator free?

Yes. You can calculate pip values and compare price movements without registration, a download or an indicator purchase. VIP Algos premium trading indicators are optional and separate from this free tool.

How do I calculate the value of one forex pip?

For a linear contract, multiply position units by pip size to get quote-currency pip value, then convert into account currency. For 100,000 EUR units of EUR/USD at a 0.0001 pip size, one pip is $10. Lots are converted to units using your entered contract size.

Can I use this as a pips calculator between two prices?

Yes. Choose Compare prices and enter entry and exit prices. For a Buy, signed pips = (exit − entry) ÷ pip size. For a Sell, reverse the sign. The calculator also shows absolute price distance, pip value and estimated gross movement value.

What is the difference between pip value and pip difference?

Pip value is the cash value of a one-pip move for your position. Pip difference is the number of pips between two prices. A 15-pip movement has the same pip count at different position sizes, but its cash value changes with the size and conversion rate.

How much is 1 pip at 0.01, 0.10 and 1 lot?

For EUR/USD with 100,000 units per lot, a 0.0001 pip size and a USD account, one pip is $0.10 at 0.01 lots, $1 at 0.10 lots and $10 at 1 lot. These values are examples; check the contract and account-currency conversion for other instruments.

How many pips is a move from 1.10000 to 1.10150?

The price difference is 0.00150. Divide by a 0.0001 pip size to get 15 pips. In Compare prices, that is +15 pips for a Buy or −15 pips for a Sell. With a 0.00001 minimum tick, the distance also equals 150 minimum ticks.

How does the forex pips calculator handle JPY pairs?

JPY-quoted forex pairs usually use a 0.01 pip size, while the minimum tick may be 0.001. For 1 lot of 100,000 units of USD/JPY, a 0.01 pip is worth 1,000 JPY before conversion. The instrument settings keep pip size and minimum tick separate.

Can I calculate fractional pips?

Yes, provided the movement aligns with the minimum tick. For example, 0.5 pips equals five ticks when each tick is one tenth of a pip. Pip size must be at least one tick and a whole multiple of the configured minimum tick.

Can this work as a forex pip profit calculator?

Yes. Enter a signed pip move to estimate its gross cash value, or compare actual or planned prices with Buy or Sell direction. The result excludes separately charged costs and financing. It is not a forecast, and a negative movement models a gross loss.

Can I use GBP, EUR or another account currency?

Yes. Choose or type the account currency. No conversion is needed when it matches the quote currency. When it matches the base currency, the tool divides by the pair price: the exit in Compare prices or the entered conversion price in Enter pips. Other account currencies need your entered exchange rate.

Does leverage change pip value?

For the same position size, pip definition and conversion rate, leverage does not change pip value. It changes the margin requirement. Increasing position size increases pip value and the cash effect of both favourable and adverse moves.

Are spread, commission and swap included?

Spread is reflected only if it is already included in the prices you compare. No separate spread, commission, financing or slippage allowance is added. The movement result is gross, so it can differ from net profit or loss on your broker statement.

Can I use the pip calculator for gold, crypto or indices?

It supports linear instruments with suitable contract size, quote currency, pip or point size and minimum tick. Gold, Bitcoin and index CFD presets are illustrative. Broker conventions differ, especially for gold pips and index points. Verify the symbol specifications or choose Custom instrument.

Why does the calculator reject some inputs?

Check minimum and maximum lots, lot increment, pip size, minimum tick and any required conversion rate. Prices and movements must fit the tick grid, and the pip size must be a whole multiple of a minimum tick. Invalid inputs clear the previous result to avoid showing an outdated estimate.
