How to use the forex profit and loss calculator

Estimate a planned exit or review a completed trade using your actual fill prices.

  1. Choose your instrument

Select a market, instrument and account currency. Presets include forex and other markets; check every contract against your broker.

  2. Enter size & prices

Choose Buy or Sell and enter your trade size in lots or units. Add your entry and exit prices, using executable prices to reflect the spread.

  3. Check settings & costs

Verify the contract and conversion rate. Add commission, fixed fees, financing and any exit slippage allowance you want to model.

  4. Calculate & review

Compare gross price P&L with net profit or loss. Enter an optional account balance or equity to see the result as an account return percentage.

Planning a trade or reviewing one? Use a hypothetical exit to compare possible outcomes. For a closed trade, use actual fill prices and set the extra slippage allowance to zero. The tool calculates a scenario; it does not forecast the next market price.

Understand the calculation

How does a trading profit calculator work?

A forex profit calculator measures the price difference between your entry and exit, applies your trade size and converts the result into your account currency. The same inputs can produce a profit or loss depending on whether you bought or sold.

A Buy trade has a positive price result when the exit is above the entry. A Sell trade has a positive price result when the exit is below the entry. Moving against the selected direction produces a negative gross result.

This forex trading calculator also separates the price result from the fees and financing you enter. A gross profit can become a net loss when those charges are larger than the gain.

Standard linear forex price result

Buy P&L = (Exit − Entry) × Units
Sell P&L = (Entry − Exit) × Units

Position units
Lots × contract size per lot
Price result
The formula gives gross P&L in the pair’s quote currency
Net result
Convert into account currency, subtract entered fees, then add the signed financing adjustment
The tool also supports a broker-defined fixed tick-value method. Match that method, the profit currency and tick values to the instrument. Entered exit slippage changes the execution estimate before P&L is calculated.
Worked example · illustrative figures

How to calculate forex profit on EUR/USD

Suppose you Buy 1.00 lot of EUR/USD at 1.10000 and close at 1.10500. Assume a standard 100,000-unit contract, a USD account and no additional slippage. The move in your favour is 0.00500, or 50 pips.

  • Trade directionBuy / Long
  • Position size1.00 lot
  • Entry → exit1.10000 → 1.10500
  • Price move+50 pips
Gross profit to net profit
Position = 1 × 100,000 = 100,000 EUR
Price difference = 1.10500 − 1.10000 = 0.00500
Gross profit = 0.00500 × 100,000 = $500
+$500gross price profit · before costs

Now enter $7 round-trip commission per lot, $3 fixed fees and a −$5 financing adjustment. Net P&L = $500 − $7 − $3 − $5 = +$485. On a $10,000 reference account, that is 4.85%.

For a Sell trade with the same entry and exit, the gross result would be −$500. With those same charges, net P&L would be −$515. These are calculations from example prices, not expected returns.

Compare price movement and trade size

How pips and lots affect forex profit

Use the tool as a forex pip profit calculator by comparing the pip movement and its cash value for your position. For EUR/USD with a USD account and a standard contract, one pip is worth $10 at 1 lot, $1 at 0.10 lots and $0.10 at 0.01 lots.

EUR/USD · USD account · 100,000 units per lot · before costs
Favourable move0.01 lot0.10 lots1.00 lot
10 pips+$1.00+$10.00+$100.00
25 pips+$2.50+$25.00+$250.00
50 pips+$5.00+$50.00+$500.00
100 pips+$10.00+$100.00+$1,000.00

An adverse move of the same size produces the corresponding gross loss in this example. Pip values differ for other pairs, account currencies and contract specifications. A pip is usually 0.0001 for most forex pairs and 0.01 for JPY pairs.

Read gross and net results separately

What changes your final trading P&L?

  • Lot size. A larger position increases both gross profits and gross losses for the same price movement. Check the broker’s contract size and volume limits.
  • Spread and slippage. Use executable entry and exit prices to reflect the spread. An optional allowance models an adverse change to the exit; avoid adding it again to actual fills.
  • Commission and fixed fees. Enter total round-trip commission per lot and any additional fixed charge in account currency.
  • Swap or financing. Enter a positive number for a credit or a negative number for a charge. All cost inputs default to zero.

To compare forex profit by lot size, keep prices and direction fixed and change only the size. Review net results as well as gross P&L, since a fixed fee can have a larger proportional effect on a small trade.

Match the result to the actual trade

Three checks before using your P&L estimate

Your prices, contract details and entered charges determine the calculation. Confirm them in your trading platform.

Match the instrument

Forex, gold, index and crypto presets are illustrative. Check contract size, tick size, profit currency and volume rules with your broker. The tool supports linear and fixed tick-value methods; inverse and nonlinear contracts are not modelled.

Check currency conversion

Profit may be generated in a different currency from your account. Conversion uses the estimated exit price where applicable, or a rate you supply. No live exchange rates are fetched, and the applicable broker rate can affect the final result.

Separate P&L from margin

The profit or loss for a fixed position and price move is different from the collateral needed to open it. This tool does not check available margin or model margin calls, liquidation or taxes. Check your account and broker rules separately.

Forex profit and loss calculator FAQs

Understand price P&L, pip movement, position size and the effect of the costs you enter.

Created by VIP Algos for educational trade planning. For a platform reference, see MetaTrader’s explanation of profit calculation and account-currency conversion.

Is this forex profit calculator free?

Yes. You can use it without signing up, downloading software or purchasing an indicator. VIP Algos premium trading indicators are a separate, optional purchase.

Can I use it as a forex loss calculator?

Yes. Enter an exit price that moves against your chosen Buy or Sell direction to estimate a gross loss. Entered fees and financing then determine the net result. You can model a planned stop price, but actual execution and costs may differ.

What is the difference between gross and net profit?

Gross P&L is the price result before the separately entered fees and financing adjustment. Net P&L subtracts commission and fixed fees, then adds signed financing. If your entry and exit are executable prices, their difference already reflects the spread.

How do I calculate forex profit from pips and lot size?

For a standard EUR/USD contract in a USD account, 1 lot is worth $10 per pip. A favourable 50-pip move on 0.10 lots therefore gives 50 × $1 = $50 gross profit. Other pairs, account currencies and contract sizes can have different pip values, so check the instrument settings.

Does changing Buy to Sell change my prices?

No. The calculator keeps your entered prices and changes the direction used in the calculation. A rise produces a positive gross result for a Buy and a negative gross result for a Sell. Costs can make the net outcomes unequal in size.

Are spread, commission, swap and slippage included?

Use executable entry and exit prices to reflect the spread. Enter round-trip commission per lot, fixed fees and signed swap or financing separately. The optional slippage allowance adjusts the exit against the trade. These cost inputs default to zero; enter each charge once.

Can I use GBP, EUR or another account currency?

Yes. Choose or enter your account currency. No conversion is needed when it matches the profit currency. For a standard forex pair with the account in its base currency, the tool uses the estimated exit price for conversion. Other combinations need the applicable rate you supply; reverse quote entry is supported.

Does leverage change the profit or loss?

For the same position size, price move and contract specifications, changing leverage does not change the price P&L. Leverage changes the margin requirement. Taking a larger position changes potential profit and loss. Use the forex margin calculator to check a separate margin scenario.

Can this trading P&L calculator handle gold, indices and crypto?

It includes illustrative presets and editable broker settings for those markets. Match the calculation method, contract size, tick values, profit currency and volume limits to your symbol. Linear and fixed tick-value contracts are supported; inverse or nonlinear contracts are not modelled.

Can I use actual prices from a closed trade?

Yes. Enter the actual entry and exit fills, trade direction and position size. Add the trade’s recorded commission, fees and financing. Set extra slippage to zero when it is already reflected in those actual fill prices, and use the applicable conversion rate.

What does the account return percentage mean?

It is net profit or loss divided by the optional account balance or equity you enter, multiplied by 100. In the worked example, $485 net profit on a $10,000 reference account is 4.85%. It is not a return on margin, and it is hidden when you leave the reference account amount blank.

Why might my result differ from MT4, MT5 or my broker?

Check actual fill prices, conversion rates, contract size, tick values, fees and financing. Verify that the trade size fits your broker’s minimum, maximum and volume step; invalid sizes are flagged rather than silently resized. Additional charges or unsupported contract rules can also create differences. Your trading statement is the final reference for a closed trade.
